HOLLAND - The football squad of the Liberian community in the Netherlands – Lone Star Holland won 3rd place trophy in a one- day football tournament in the Dutch City of Eindhoven.
The sensational Liberians knocked out the Cameroonians 3-0 to advance to the semi-finals. The semi-finals duel was the battle of the giants when Lone Star knocked horns with the defending champions Great Africa from Rotterdam.
Prior to the two teams semi-final clash, they met in the preliminary round of the tournament which was tension packed. Three Liberian players were sent off the field for what the referee described as disorderly conduct. The match ended one at piece or draw.
Lone Star appearing in the semi-finals ranked her the most impressive newcomer in the tournament. Unfortunately, Lone Star hope to break the record by winning the tournament’s first place trophy as a newcomer was shattered when she was defeated by Great Africa 2- 0 in the semi-final.
The tournament last year second place winner FC Multi-Culti beat Great Africa in the grand finale 3-1 to become African Football tournament Eindhoven 2008 champions.
James Kamara former LPRC Oliers striker flew in from France with some Liberians to drum-up support for the Liberian’s team.
Mr. Kamara who featured in one Lone Star matches said he was impressed by the by the level of discipline and skills displayed by young Liberians.
He expressed gratitude for being at the tournament to give support to an initiative that recognizes potentials in Liberian youths.
The African Football tournament which started in 2007 is organized by an Eindhoven based Foundation Africa4Real. The one-day tournament brings together teams from the minority communities across the Netherlands (Holland).
